Remington 870 20 Gauge Barrel built on 12 gauge large frame, pre72, NEW! This is a pre-1972 20 Gauge 870 Barrel. From 1950 – 1971, all Remington 870 20 gauge shotguns were built on the large frame / 12 gauge frame. This barrel has the larger magazine tube ring and the larger frame face to slide into the larger frame. Very rare vintage old inventory. Have you ever opened a box and been surprised? That was me when I found this barrel. Appears unused / never used. I do not see signs of the barrel mounted to magazine tube nut scratching the mounting ring. Interior barrel looks shiny. Some very minor exterior rubbing wear from storage for the last 60 plus years. Please review the pictures carefully for condition, as they are part of the de. See proof marks in the pictures. NOT Mossberg, Carlson, or some other secondary manufacture. Understanding Remington 870 frame sizes. Originally the 12, 16, and 20 gauge guns were all built on the 12 gauge size receiver. 410 and 28 gauge guns were introduced on the smaller receiver size. In 1972 Remington introduced the LW 20 gauge 870 shotguns on the same receiver size as the 28 gauge. Since 1972 Remington has been making 20 gauge 870s on the smaller receiver, and all current production 20 gauge guns are still on the smaller receiver. Receiver codes on 20 gauge 870 shotguns are as listed below, the codes are the last letter in the serial number. Receivers left the factory set up for either 2 3/4″ shells or 3″ shells and are differentiated by the codes in that regard as well. Full size frame, 2 3/4 = X (began production in 1950), Receiver Serial Number example: 0000000X. Full size frame, 3 = N (began production in 1962, ended in 1972). Receiver Serial Number example: 0000000N. If your shotgun has a serial number that does not end in N or X, this is not the barrel for you. If you use this barrel on a “N” magnum frame, use only 2 3/4 shells. Small frame LW 2 3/4 = K (began production in 1972). Small frame LT-20 3 = U (began production in 1972). I found this on the Remington webpage under shotguns” and “original factory barrels before it was shut down with the bankruptcy. “NOTE: Model 870 Extra Barrels with 3″ chambers will fit Super Magnum, Magnum, and 2-3/4 receivers. These barrels will handle both 2-3/4″ and 3″ shells when used on Magnum receivers. Use only 2-3/4″ shells when these barrels are used on 2-3/4″ receivers. IF YOUR MODEL 1100 OR 870 20 GAUGE HAS A SERIAL NUMBER ENDING IN THE LETTER X OR N, CURRENTLY PRODUCED 20 GAUGE BARRELS WILL NOT INTERCHANGE. Message me with any questions!
